If you trade a prop-firm evaluation, your NinjaTrader max contracts limit is one of the few rules you can break with a single click. A quantity box left at 3 instead of 1, a fast double click, an add that pushes you one contract over: on a market order, the fill comes back in a fraction of a second, and the rule is already broken by the time anything can react.
Today we’re releasing PAT Chart Trader, a new order panel for NinjaTrader 8 built around one idea: check first, then send. It sits in your chart’s Chart Trader column in place of NinjaTrader’s own order buttons. Pair it with PAT Risk Manager and every entry you place from the panel is run past your limits first. If an order would take you over your cap, it goes out smaller or not at all, and nothing over the limit ever reaches your broker.
Most risk add-ons enforce a NinjaTrader max contracts rule the same way: they see an order once it has been placed, compare it with your rules, and cancel it if it breaks one. For a resting limit or stop entry, that works well, because there is time to cancel before price gets there.
A market order is different. While building PAT Chart Trader we measured it on a live prop-firm evaluation account (Apex, on Rithmic). NinjaTrader holds an add-on’s cancel until the broker has accepted the order, and by then a market order has usually filled, in about 100 milliseconds. The cancel arrives after the fill and is rejected. Worse, that rejected cancel can lead an ATM strategy to cancel its own stop and target, leaving the position unprotected at exactly the wrong moment.
NinjaTrader does have a setting that stops an oversized order before it is sent: the Max Position Size in its Risk window. Risk templates apply to simulation accounts, though. Live and funded accounts take their risk settings from the broker or prop firm, and some prop firms, Apex among them, remove the Risk setting from their accounts. If your account still has it, use it. If it doesn’t, the dependable way to enforce a NinjaTrader max contracts limit on market orders is to ask before sending.
PAT Chart Trader reads the rules you’ve already set in PAT Risk Manager, so there’s nothing to configure twice. Before any new entry goes out, it asks the Risk Manager whether the account can take it:
Sent 1 of 2: max 2 contracts of MES 12-26. If nothing fits, it’s refused and no order is placed.Risk checks on · PAT Risk Manager. We tested this NinjaTrader max contracts check on a Sim account set up like a 50K evaluation with a 2-contract MES cap. Buy 2 filled. One more contract was refused with no order placed. From a 1-lot long, Buy 2 went out as 1.

One honest note on scope, because it matters when your account is on the line. Orders placed from this panel are checked before they are sent. Orders from NinjaTrader’s other order windows (SuperDOM, Basic Entry, order hotkeys, strategies, charts without this panel) are covered by PAT Risk Manager’s usual checks after they are placed. Put simply: trade from the panel, and your cap holds.
You don’t need PAT Risk Manager to use PAT Chart Trader. On its own it’s a fast, complete order panel, and it was built to avoid the small mistakes that cost real money:
Buy Limit 7741.25) before you let go, with limit, stop or MIT chosen by where you drop it.
The full feature list is on the PAT Chart Trader product page, and every button and message is explained in the documentation.
Then PAT Chart Trader is the missing half. The Risk Manager keeps watching every order from every window, exactly as it does now. The panel simply adds a check before sending for the orders you place from it, using the same limits and locks. Change a rule in the Risk Manager and the panel follows immediately.
If you’re on our original NT Risk Manager, PAT Risk Manager is part of the new PAT Trade Suite, and existing NT Risk Manager customers get it free. Contact support and we’ll get you set up.
PAT Chart Trader is $99, one time: a lifetime license with every future update included. No subscription, no renewals and no paid upgrade tiers. A 2 PC license is available if you trade on two computers.
All sales are final, which is why every licensed tool we make has a free trial. Try PAT Chart Trader for 7 days with every feature unlocked, on your own charts, before you decide.
