Advanced Second Entry Strategy Documentation

Advanced Second Entry Strategy Documentation covers installation, how Continuation and Fade trades are decided, order submission and the structural stop, settings, licensing, and common troubleshooting. Use this page as a task-based reference alongside the Advanced Second Entry indicator documentation, since the strategy automates that indicator’s own 2EL/2ES signals.

1. Install and Deploy

  1. In NinjaTrader, go to Tools > Import > NinjaScript Add-On.
  2. Select the Advanced Second Entry Strategy ZIP package.
  3. Complete the import and allow NinjaTrader to compile if prompted.
  4. Restart NinjaTrader if required.

The strategy automatically adds its own instance of the Advanced Second Entry indicator to any chart it’s attached to, so signal detection stays in sync with what the strategy is trading — you don’t need to add the indicator separately first.

Where to Find It

After import, the strategy appears under Strategies when you right-click a chart, as AdvancedSecondEntryStrategy.

Advanced Second Entry Strategy trades the same 2EL/2ES structure the indicator identifies, automatically.

2. First-Run Checklist

  1. Activate your license (see Licensing and Activation below).
  2. Attach the strategy to a chart via Strategies > New Strategy > AdvancedSecondEntryStrategy.
  3. Set ATM Template Name to an existing ATM template in your NinjaTrader install, and Stop Order Label to match that template’s stop order name exactly (default Stop1).
  4. Enable the strategy and confirm it compiles without errors.
  5. Step through Market Replay or run it on a Sim account first — see Known Limitations for why Strategy Analyzer isn’t an option here.

3. How the Strategy Trades: Continuation vs. Fade

Before arming anything, every 2EL/2ES signal gets checked against the indicator’s own trend read:

  • If the signal agrees with that trend — a 2EL while structure is reading up, a 2ES while it’s reading down — it’s traded as a Continuation, in the signal’s own direction.
  • If it runs against the trend instead, and Enable Fade (Counter-Trend Signals) is left at its default (on), the strategy takes the opposite side as a Fade, on the idea that the against-trend push won’t hold. Switch that setting off and these disagreeing signals are passed over entirely rather than traded either way.
  • Until a trend is actually established, there’s nothing to disagree with, so every signal is handled as if it already agreed with trend.

Whichever way a trade is classified, the entry itself goes in right away, on the confirming bar, priced one tick past that bar’s own high or low in the direction being traded. A Fade trade uses the identical pricing math, just measured off the opposite side of that same bar.

A counter-trend signal like this, with Fade enabled, arms a trade in the opposite direction instead of the raw signal direction.

4. How Trend Is Determined

Trend comes from the indicator’s own swing-pivot tracking (Dow-theory style), not the immediate up-leg/down-leg flag that flips on every single 2EL/2ES. Each time a new swing-pivot count starts, the new pivot high/low is compared against the previous one: a higher-high-and-higher-low sets an uptrend, a lower-high-and-lower-low sets a downtrend, and a mixed result leaves the prior trend direction in place rather than resetting to neutral. This makes trend “sticky” — it only flips on a clean, opposite pivot sequence, not on every pullback.

5. Order Submission and the Structural Stop

  • A pending entry only lives for the bar it was submitted on — once a new bar opens, anything still unfilled gets pulled rather than left sitting at a price that’s no longer relevant.
  • If NT8 outright rejects an order (say, a buy-stop already through the current market), the strategy sits out that direction for one full bar before trying it again.
  • After a fill, the strategy sets its own protective stop through your ATM template — priced one tick past the opposite side of the original signal bar — using whichever order name is entered in Stop Order Label, so that name has to match the template exactly.
  • If that stop placement keeps failing, the strategy stops retrying after Max Stop Apply Attempt Bars and closes the position outright instead of letting it run with nothing protecting it.
  • Turning the strategy off or pulling it from the chart clears out any resting entry and closes anything still open, so nothing is left running unmonitored.

6. Settings

Core

  • ATM Template Name — the ATM template the strategy submits orders through
  • Stop Order Label — must match the stop order’s name inside that ATM template (default Stop1)
  • Break Offset (ticks) — how far beyond the signal bar’s extreme the entry stop order is placed
  • Enable Fade (Counter-Trend Signals) — trade counter-trend signals as reversals instead of skipping them (default on)
  • Max Stop Apply Attempt Bars — how many bars the strategy retries applying the structural stop before force-flattening

Indicator Pass-Through

  • Show Projection Lines — turns on the indicator’s own preview lines for where it expects entry, stop, and target to land, plotted through the instance the strategy adds for you (default on)
  • Require Strict Signal Bars / Strict Signal Zone (%) — the same signal-bar-strength filter the indicator itself implements; a weak-close signal bar is ignored entirely and never becomes a trade (off by default, matching the indicator)

EMA Filter

  • Enable EMA Filter — turns the filter on or off entirely
  • A long only qualifies if its price is above the EMA; a short only qualifies if its price is below it
  • Max Distance From EMA (ticks) — skip a trade if its stop-entry price is more than this many ticks from the EMA (0 = no limit)
  • Add EMA To Chart — plots the EMA on the chart (default on)

Status HUD

A small fixed text block in the chart’s top-left corner shows, every bar, the current trend (informational only), whether an order or position is currently active, and — while flat — what’s being watched next. No properties to configure.

Confirm your ATM Template Name and Stop Order Label match an actual template before enabling the strategy.

7. Licensing and Activation

Advanced Second Entry Strategy uses the same license as the Advanced Second Entry indicator — since the strategy automatically adds an instance of the indicator to your chart, activating the indicator’s license also covers the strategy.

  1. Open Control Center > New > Advanced Second Entry License.
  2. Copy the Machine ID if you need to send it to support.
  3. Paste your license key into the top field.
  4. Click Activate.
  5. Use Check anytime to re-validate the current machine.

8. Known Limitations

  • Strategy Analyzer won’t run this — NinjaTrader restricts any ATM-based strategy to live, Sim, or Replay order routing, which is a platform-level rule rather than anything specific to this build. Step through Market Replay or a Sim account instead if you want to validate it before going live.
  • The strategy carries one open trade at a time and won’t look at a new signal until that trade is flat again.
  • Continuation and Fade cover today’s logic; failed-breakout trades and entries anticipated ahead of the actual break aren’t part of this release yet.

9. Common Fixes

The Strategy Won’t Compile

  • confirm you’re running the matching version of the Advanced Second Entry indicator alongside the strategy
  • reimport both packages and recompile via the NinjaScript Editor (F5)

No Trades Are Being Placed

  • confirm ATM Template Name points to a real, existing ATM template
  • confirm Stop Order Label exactly matches that template’s stop order name
  • confirm the strategy is enabled and the account/instrument combination is valid for live or Sim trading
  • check the Output window — rejected orders and EMA-filter skips are both logged there

An Order Was Rejected and Never Resubmitted

That’s expected behavior, not a bug — a rejection puts that side on hold for exactly one bar so an already-bad price doesn’t just get fired straight back in. The next qualifying signal picks up normally.

The Protective Stop Didn’t Land

  • confirm Stop Order Label matches your ATM template exactly
  • the strategy retries automatically for up to Max Stop Apply Attempt Bars, then force-flattens the position rather than leave it unprotected

10. FAQ

Do I Need the Advanced Second Entry Indicator Installed Separately?

No — the strategy adds its own instance of the indicator to the chart automatically. You do need a valid license, the same one used by the indicator.

Can I Backtest This in Strategy Analyzer?

No — that’s a NinjaTrader restriction on ATM-driven strategies generally, not something this build could add support for. Step through it in Market Replay or on a Sim account instead.

What’s the Difference Between Continuation and Fade?

A Continuation trade goes with the signal because the signal already matches the established trend. A Fade trade goes the other way on purpose, when the signal cuts against trend, on the bet that move won’t hold. You can turn Fade off if you’d rather those against-trend signals were skipped entirely.

Does This Trade Failed Breakouts (FBO)?

Not in this release — Continuation and Fade are what’s built so far. A failed-breakout trade type is on the roadmap.

Can More Than One Trade Be Open at Once?

No — the strategy waits for whatever trade is open to go flat before it will act on another signal.
